The Feldenkrais Method® was created by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), physicist, engineer, researcher, Judo master, and author.  Due to a chronic knee injury from playing soccer, he applied his knowledge of physics, body mechanics, martial arts, neurology, learning theory and psychology to create this method.

Here are the main Feldenkrais® principles:

  • Small and slow

By doing the movements small and slow, you can feel what you are doing. Are you clenching your jaw? Are you aiming for perfection? Are you impatient? By answering these questions, you start to learn more about your habits.

“Easily, simply, comfortably. It is exactly the opposite of what they say on the television: higher, faster, stronger. Here we say: slower, more comfortably, more pleasantly.”  – Moshe Feldenkrais

  • Quality

During Awareness Through Movement® classes, you are striving for quality of movement, not mindless repetitions. A couple of movements that are effortless while your breathe is free is quality movement.

“We do not achieve … by repetition, muscle exercising, or by increasing speed and force, but by widening and refining the cerebral control of the muscle range.”- Moshe Feldenkrais

  • Awareness

In the Awareness Through Movement® classes, there are lots of questions posed to you. Where do you have more weight? Is your right shoulder connected to your right heel? What is the distance between your left eye and left ear? Is it easier to roll your head to the right or to the left?  By developing your kinesthetic sense (i.e. knowing the position of the parts of your body), you can change your habits to learn new ways of moving.

“You will never get what you want as long as you don’t pay attention or don’t know what you are doing.” – Moshe Feldenkrais

  • Education

The Feldenkrais Method® is an educational system. Often, you will feel you accomplished little but your nervous system is still digesting the lesson. Over time, after many lessons, you will get those “aha” moments that are truly sumptuous because you discovered them.

“What you truly learn best will appear to you later as your own discovery.” – Moshe Feldenkrais
